Gaels Show Their Range’

Ranelagh Gaels 2-11
Park Rangers 2-9

Ranelagh Gaels put a bad week behind them on Tuesday night by booking a place in the Murphy Cup final.

The Gaels came into this semi-final against Park Rangers at Bushy Park on the back of two disappointing defeats in AFL Division 8.

But Liam O’Hagan’s team got back to winning ways – and gave themselves a great chance of winning a cup this season – in style.

Ranelagh got back to basics, working hard and winning breaking ball around the middle of the field; two of the keys to winning any game of Gaelic football.

A Danny Kennedy goal gave the Gaels the ideal start and a 1-1 lead early on, but Rangers got themselves into the contest and quickly hit back with 2-2.

Having played with the wind and down the hill in the first half the home side trailed by a point, 2-5 to 1-7, at the break.

This meant they literally faced an uphill struggle in the second half, but they were equal to the challenge.

The defence held firm, only giving away four points after the change of ends.

John Daly, Marin Egan and Denis Crehan in the fullback line were rock solid.

Across the halfbacks Tom Cusack, JH Carty and Ian Naughton held firm and got their hands on plenty of possession to act as a springboard for attacks.

Because of injuries Denis Doolan is away from his normal centreback home and was busy around the middle of the field alongside Brian Regan.

And he popped up in the dying minutes to score a dramatic winner for the Gaels following some great tackling by the full forward line, including the hard-working Jer McCarthy.

  1. Is that the only stock photo we have of Dennis?

    Is the definitely training tomorrow?

  2. I can confirm that is an ‘achieved’ image of Denis. I don’t put the Doolan file in the filing cabinet cause he’s always popping up.

  3. Well, I think Denis looks lovely in that photo. I’d just love it if he’d trim that bloody beard of his a bit…
