Gaels ‘Knocked Off Their Perch

Ranelagh Gaels 2-9
Castleknock  1-13

Ranelagh Gaels’ defence of their Murphy Cup title suffered another setback today as they went down to Castleknock at Bushy Park.

In glorious spring sunshine the teams played a thirteen-a-side contest, the visitors failing to bring the  full compliment of fifteen. Positions meant very little such was the space on the field and it took the Gaels longer to settle; a fortuitous goal for Castleknock setting them on their way.

Ranelagh had a four point deficit to make up and scores from Johnny Conlon and Gearoid Garvey helped them on their way.

The key score of the half came soon after, sandwiched in between efforts from Conor Harnett and Cathal MacSuibhne. A quickly taken free from Conlon gave Paudie Sugrue the chance to put his side in front and he made no mistake with an assured finish into the corner of the net.

The Gaels picked up where they left off after the restart, Denis Doolan raised a green flag as the home side got into a six point lead.

Despite their lack of numbers, Castleknock had more in the tank and they clawed their way back with a succession of well taken scores.

They went back in front, only for a Conlon free to equalise; but the visitors responded again and left Bushy Park with a one point win.

Liam O’Hagan’s team have a chance to get back to winning ways next week with another home fixture, this time in a league clash with St Marks.

  1. Unlucky lads, reads like we’re still clearing the cobwebs. Fair play to Paudie who surely must of stayed away from a Chester Road party.
