Great Night To Be Out!

Ranelagh Gaels          4-7

St Anne’s                     3-8

Ranelagh Gaels registered their first win of the year in Bushy Park last night, defeating St Anne’s of Bohernabreena in the Division 5 Cup.

Spring sunshine greeted the players as they arrived at the venue; this was soon followed by overcast, dreary skies and finally came the torrential downpours either side of half time – all in all it was unquestionably a great night to be out.

St Anne’s had the better of the opening exchanges; despite conceding a goal from Gaels wing forward Anna they responded with two majors of their own and went into an eight point lead at one stage.

Ger Connolly pulled a goal back for Ranelagh, squeezing home from a near-impossible angle after a goal mouth scrap. That left only five between the sides at the break, 2-4 to 3-6.

After the restart the midfield duo of Aoife and Brid came into the game much more, the latter scoring a blistering goal drilled low to the corner as part of an outstanding overall performance.

The visitors fought back again and missed a succession of wides, many due to the pressure they were being put under by the home defence.

Louise Connolly put in another brilliant display at corner back for the second week running while Karen again looked very comfortable in adapting to her new centre back berth.

Laurene, playing in the missing No7 jersey, won a huge amount of ball around the half back line feeding Edel O’Brien who ran and ran at the Anne’s defence, causing them problems all game. She capped her match winning contribution with the last goal of the night and the insurance points that sealed a first win for the girls in 2012.

We certainly hope there’s more to come, its back to league action next week as the Gaels host Kilmacud Crokes at Fortress Bushy.

  1. Why we haven’t got a bigger step ladder or why Brian just doesn’t move it under the hook is beyond me. Well done on the result last night ladies. As Caoimhe would say “from little acorns”
