Gaels Out-Fox Cabinteeley

Ranelagh Gaels        2-12

Foxrock/Cabinteeley   4-5

Ranelagh Gaels were rewarded for their sterling efforts last night with a last-gasp win in an away clash with Foxrock/Cabinteeley.

Having played some fabulous football in the first half, the Gaels were a point to the good at the break, 1-7 to 2-3. Edel O’Brien was the key threat, notching three fine points and causing problems throughout for the hosts’ defence.

Full forward and captain Edel Brennan provided the fulcrum in attack and got a score in either half in an excellent all round display.

The Gaels immediately built on their lead in the second half, pushing the gap out to three.

Anna King had a stormer from centre forward, linking play and helping herself to 1-3 in the process.

The girls found themselves three points down with five minutes remaining but they didn’t wilt and kept attacking with purpose.

Ann Marie came up from wing back to score a crucial point and then victory was sealed with the game heading into injury time.

Sharon McGeady, making a burst in along the end line, got a crucial touch to a long ball played in; her touch took the ball away from the Foxrock goalkeeper and Babs applied the finishing touch to get the winning goal on her return to action.

It was exactly what Ranelagh deserved in what was a pulsating encounter against the table toppers.

While all on the sideline were close to losing the run of themselves, the team’s new mascot, Jack Kennedy, kept his cool…
