Gaels ‘Lock’ Down Vital League Points

Ranelagh Gaels 1-14
Lucan Sarsfields 0-15

Ranelagh Gaels rounded out a productive week with a great away win over Lucan Sarsfields on Friday.

Following on from Tuesday night’s battling draw against St Brendan’s, it means three valuable league points out of a possible four in AFL Division 8.

This was an extremely competitive game of football and the home side battled on right until the end, ensuring an exciting finish.

In the final attack Lucan broke forward from the back and saw a close-range shot blaze over keeper Ronan Rasdale’s bar. Had it gone under the scores would have been level just before the final whistle.

The Gaels got the ideal start when Enda Marren stuck a goal, rounding the keeper soccer-style, just minutes after the throw-in.

But playing at their Twelfth Lock base Sarsfields weren’t going to just roll over and die and they roared back into this match. At half-time the scores were tied at 1-6 to 0-9.

After the change of ends Ranelagh had a strong breeze at their backs, but this alone wasn’t going to be enough to win them this finely balanced game.

At a vital stage of the contest captain Brian Regan leapt to catch three inspirational balls in succession in the middle of the field, which helped to move the Gaels two points clear.

There were excellent scores from the ever-reliable Johnny Conlon, Eamon Courtney and substitute Alan Toolan, who came on and helped to close the game out.
