Ranelagh Kil’ Off Crokes

Ranelagh Gaels 1-15 Kilmacud Crokes 2-11

Ranelagh Gaels Ladies qualified for the Junior D Championship semi-final after a pulsating encounter with Kilmacud Crokes at Bushy Park on Wednesday night.

Last week was an exhibition of football as the girls put Clontarf to the sword, this week though it was all about guts and passion; in difficult, greasy conditions against a talented Crokes outfit the girls ground out the win to progress to the last four.

The opening exchanges were a sign of what was to come, with every score well earned, requiring hard work and patience. Crokes went into a three point lead but were pegged with points from Anna King, Edel Brennan and Ger Connolly, who had a super game on the 40.

The Gaels went in a point to the good at the break and as conditions deteriorated the message ringing in their ears was that the team that worked the harder would win the day.

Even though they went four points behind at one stage the girls kept working and kept playing their football.

Edel O’Brien was summoned from the bench and put in an incredible display, notching four points despite being hampered with an injury.

With the game on a knife-edge, the crucial score came from Brid Firtear who drilled a low shot past the Kilmacud net-minder to push her side in front with just a few minutes remaining.

The work-rate continued right to the end and Ranelagh saw it out thanks to a great defensive effort and they can now look forward to another semi-final.
