Gaels Show Their Boughal to Secure Last Four Berth

Ranelagh Gaels  2-12     Ballyboughal  2-5

Ranelagh Gaels Ladies qualified for the last four of the Junior D Championship last night after an impressive group-stage victory over Ballyboughal at Bushy Park.

It was a typically cagey opening to what was in effect a knockout tie – the north Dublin side having already suffered a defeat – and both teams took time to settle with attackers finding space at a premium early on.

Plenty of questions were asked of the Gaels defence but with Emma Kiernan in imperious form they kept the visitors at bay.

Eimear Power and Eva O’Driscoll worked tirelessly around the middle third and both made invaluable contributions on a night when sheer work ethic and effort shone through for Ranelagh.

The game turned in the home side’s favour at the end of the opening period with a quick fire double from the Buckley sisters – first Aoife almost ripped the net from the goal frame with a blistering shot and within a minute Elaine popped over a score that left the hosts two points to the good at the break.

Ballyboughal responded first after the restart with a point and then a goal of their own but it was then that Ranelagh stood up and took the game by the scruff of the neck. With ‘Boughal dropping their centre forward deep in attempt to gain possession this gave centre-back Aoife Long licence to get forward and she drove the team on at every opportunity.

Bláithín Brady was calmness personified as she repelled numerous attacks in a deep lying defensive role while up front Edel O’Brien got better and better as the game went on, culminating in the all-important second goal with a Canavan-esque finish low into the corner.

Despite a late goal from Ballyboughal the Gaels saw the contest out and ended up on the right side of a seven-point margin. The team have their final group game next Wednesday at St Finian’s Newcastle; with both teams already through to the semi-finals the game will decide who tops the group and who secures vital home advantage in the next stage.
