Ladies All-Ireland Sevens 2013

The Ladies of Ranelagh Gaels rounded off their season by competing in the All-Ireland Sevens tournament hosted by the St Slyvesters and Naomh Mearnog clubs in North Dublin on Saturday.

Pitted in a 4-team group, the Gaels lined up alongside fellow Dubliners St James Gaels, St Helen’s of Longford and Mna na Deirge from Tyrone.

A devastating display of running power from St Helen’s saw the girls suffer defeat in their first match; this despite the best efforts of Bláithín Brády playing as goalkeeper/sweeper, great work around the middle from Eva O’Driscoll and Ger Connolly who scored a wonderful goal with a deft finish.

Ranelagh got things back on track in the next game as they beat fellow Junior D competitors James Gaels, just a few weeks after defeating the same opposition in the County semi-final.

A superb performance resulted in a goal blitz with Edel O’Brien to the fore while strong displays from Louise Donohoe and Aoife Long ensured Ranelagh were off the mark.

Onto their final group game and the team knew a win would guarantee them a place in the knockout stages. They started brilliantly, laying down a marker early on with Aoife Buckley making inroads into the Tyrone backline.

Dorota Borla led the line up front winning some crucial frees while the game also saw the return of Sharon McGeady. The Gaoth Dobhair native played in the first game but having picked up a nasty injury had to make a quick dash to hospital but still managed to return to play her part in her side’s qualification for the Quarter Final – bullai fir Sharon!

Mayo side Kilmoremoy provided the opposition in the Shield Quarter Final and it was the same old story for the green and red as they couldn’t live with a team in blue.

Corra Travers, despite carrying an injury, produced a fantastic display from defence as she held the centre and didn’t give the Westerners a sniff at goal.

Brid Firtear, meanwhile, ran the show from the middle of the field, playing a pivotal role as the Gaels gained the upper hand in the opening half.

Ranelagh now had a chance of qualifying for the final but in spite of their best efforts the day’s exertions took their toll on the bodies and they just came up short against Aughnamullan from Monaghan; the Farney side would go on to win in the final. Ranelagh were right in it up until the end with Bláithín’s goals keeping her team in the fight but time ran out and the Gaels made their exit.

It was a brilliant day’s work from the girls and a great way to round off a season that saw huge strides made by everyone and the management would like to thank them all for being best bunch of players in the world!

Anyway, if you have any recommendations or tips for new blog owners please share. I know this is off subject but I just wanted to ask. Kudos!
