Former Olympian gives his insights

Ranelagh Gaels held a great club night recently, with members from all areas of the club getting together, sharing ideas and getting to know each other.

As a young club without a premises of our own, sometimes it’s difficult to get coaches, players and parents together, but we managed it on this occasion.

The main feature of the night was a Q&A with Shane O’Connor, who coaches in our Juvenile Academy with the 2011 boys.

As well as being a junior hurler with Ballinteer St John, Shane (pictured with Ranelagh Gaels President Liam O’Hagan) represented Ireland at the 2010 Winter Olympics and is current Chair of the Athletes’ Commission of the Olympic Council of Ireland.

Shane was able to give some great insights into balancing sport, life and work, into athlete pathways and coaching.

Thanks to everyone who came along and contributed to what was a great evening and to Old Wesley RFC in Donnybrook for the use of their tremendous facilities.
